I really disliked Mother’s Day.  It’s mainly because whenever Mother’s Day arrived, I would become a very selfish person with very unrealistic expectations. Every year I set myself up for disappointment and by the end of that day, I was disappointed with myself as well.   So this year, I decided that I’m not really going to celebrate Mother’s Day…for me. I will celebrate Mother’s Day for other people.

Early Mother’s Day morning, while my kids and husband were still asleep, I went out to breakfast with my mom, my aunt, my brother, and his wife. It was lovely! And to my surprise, my brother and wife paid for my meal. That was totally unexpected.

My father-in-law needed us to to help him with some yard work and Mother’s Day was the only day in our schedule that was free. So that’s what we did. After church and yummy grilled cheese sandwiches cooked to perfection by my husband, we headed out to my father-in-law’s home.

It was a gorgeous spring day. My father-in-law put us all to work and we got a lot of things done. He really appreciated our help and we really were glad to help him. Afterwards, we stopped at my husband’s mother’s grave and planted some marigolds and said a prayer.

On our way home, we stopped at Sky Manor Restaurant which is located at the Sky Manor Airport in Pittstown, NJ. The restaurant is a family-owned business located right next to the runway of the airport. As we ate dinner, we saw several small airplanes land and we even saw a hot air balloon fly right overhead.

That Mother’s Day was one of the nicest ones I have experienced in a long time.  It was totally unexpected.

I am so thankful for the gift of that day and the unexpected blessings that filled it.
